Rear shock mounts.....do better exist
I have a 95 318is and I am tired of replacing the rear shock mounts every year because of there noise. This is by far the worst designed part on the car.
Does anything recommend any aftermarket or better ones that don't always go bad?

Try the ones for M3; they should be sturdier.

Every year is too often there must be something else wrong.
Yes M3 are the stiffest. E46 M3 are the stiffest OEM. You can get Urethane too but even stock ones should last years, not go out every year..

E46 M3 rear shock are the sturdiest and are what we use exclusively on e46, e36, Z3 & e30s. Urethane is intended for race cars. On the street urethane mounts are too squeaky, too stiff, and will eventually blow out your rear shock towers.

I have had Urethane RSM's in my M3 for about 2 1/2 years, no noise, no problems. I cant comment on relative ride harshness because I have other modified suspension parts.
For the average person I would recommend the E36 M3 RSM's.

"I have had Urethane RSM's in my M3 for about 2 1/2 years, no noise, no problems. " That's because you live in Texas where it's relatively warm all year and the urethane remains pliable. Here in the Northeast urethane gets hard & shrinks in cold weather (below 30 deg f). In that state urethane isn't pliable, doesn't absorb any road shock & the bushings then squeak & rattle around. All that stiffness then imparts more load on the rear shock towers. Combine that w/ winter potholes & the rear shock towers start to crack. Just lettin' ya know what we've seen over the 15 years we've been fixing BMWs... Schneller ![]()
