91 318i code 1244

185,000 miles, great car until now. Will not rev past 2000 rpm. code 1244 shown, replaced cps. No change. Prior to sensor replacement, I found oil in #2 plug tube and decided to replace plugs, wire set and coil for # 2. Also found oil in CPS hole. Any suggestions as to get this old girl running smooth again??

Oil in the plug well is a bad valve cover gasket.

CPS? crank or cam position sensor?

91 is at the border its an E36 right?

What does 1244 translate to?

I'm not in the mood to look it all up myself.

AFAIK, the cam position sensor is in head and is surrounded by oil.

The cam position CEL can happen and remain stored in the ECU with no ill effects, so that may have no bearing on your problem.

We have had a few "wont rev past" threads this year but I dont think they all resolved the same way.

You should check your ECU for signs of bad or cracked solder.

Unhappy

So I replaced the ECU, than the mechanic says it is the mass air flow unit, so we buy a used one and replace that. Still same problem Mechanic says it still shows a bad cam shaft sensor. I bought a new one from Pelican when this whole mess started. What is the chance of buying a defective sensor. Wires have been checked, everything else is or seems to be fine. The engine purrs until it hits 2000 RPM and then all hell breaks loose! Anyone have any suggestions??? HELP!!
