e30 325 starter bolts... HELP
Anyone have a good method for removing the starter I'm finding the bolts really hard to get access to. I'm generally pretty resourceful, but this car is terrible to work on. Maybe 3' of extensions and universals?? I'm really starting to hate bimmers. I'm trying to change out the clutch. Might be easier to pull the bloody engine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

On my E36, I think I used 18" of extensions and a couple of them womble extensions which is similar in purpose to a Universal joint.

Remove the airbox and intake hose off the throttle body for better access. Hold the nut with a box end wrench and use a ratchet to loosen the bolts if you are doing it by your self. If you have help, use several extensions to access the nut from behind and have your helper hold the bolt from the top. The top two bolts holding the bellhousing to the engine are the hardest ones to remove. It helps to loosen the transmission mounts and tip it down a bit to gain access. I used 4 or 5 "wobbly" type extensions and a lot of cursing to remove these.

My E36 has a threaded starter so no nuts. I accessed the bolts from the tranny side.

Here is what I did. Go to AutoZone and buy their brand 10mm 12 point box end wrench. Put the box end into your vice and heat it until it glows with bottle butane. SLOWLY apply pressure and bend the wrench until you have it at roughly a 14 degree angle. Wear a heavy leather glove because it's HOT (I know you think I'm nuts right now but just hang in there)
This wrench can now be used to reach and hold the "Star Drive" bolt on the tranny side and you can reach it from the engine bay for the top bolt and from underneath for the bottom bolt. This has worked for me countless times and it beats the heck out of the multiple extension snapped to two universal adapter reaching from the rear of the transmission method. All you have to loose is a few bucks on the wrench. P.S. The AutoZone brand is a nice long wrench and there is a no questions asked for exchange if you break the first one when bending. Just do it slow and really hot. Shawn Gratz Orlando, FL shawngratz@gmail.com |
