Are you looking to swap simply engine only, engine & DME or a substantially different engine?

first things first. Do you have to meet an annual/biannual smog test? If so, chances are good that you will really only be able to use one that is the same as what you have.

for example, suppose you had an S10 pickup that came with a GM 2.8 V6 and need to replace it but were subject to Calif smog. You would find that trying to upgrade to a 3.1 could be nearly impossible because the 3.1 would not pass the visual inspection in most places.
