Engine won't turn. Help?
My lovely 325i and me did our best impersonation of tokyo drift and ended up in a hillside. (throw me a bone, it was raining!) We were going about 30mph and ditched into a loose packed dirt hill.
I planned to sell her so I could afford my next '36, but ended up buying a great E36 318i on the cheap (tranny issue I fixed in two hours - Thanks Pelican Parts!) which I am actually totally in love with. So... my 325i sits in the drive, front end damage, getting no love and having the interior torn apart for spares. I finally decided to fix and track her. Got the radiator and fan off, checked the belts, pulleys, etc. All seems to be good. The right side bumper shock pillar is tweaked, but that's what friends with big arms and bigger sledgehammers are for. My main concern is that there appears to be some mechanical binding on the engine. I can't get her to turn. She tries, but there is definitely something binding somewhere. The night of the accident, in a total "omg I just crashed on a mountain road in the middle of nowhere" panic I restarted the engine, she coughed and sputtered (MAF was knocked off) then died. Tried again. Same. Again. Same. Again, this time she didn't start, just tried a turn or two and the starter clutch clicked. At that point the adrenaline began to wear off and common sense kicked in. I took the key out and gave up. So, what could possibly be wrong? The furthest penretation into the engine compartment was the radiator moving back about two inches. Not even touching the lower pulleys. Thus, I can't imagine the engine took any damage. And yet, she simply won't turn (I mean literally. The crank moves maybe 1/4 turn and then the starter clutch clicks) Please help me figure this out. I am moving in about 6 weeks and for breaks between packing I plan to strip the car of unnecessary weight, weld in a rollcage and turn her into a track car. Help? |

Is there any damage under thew car?
Maybe the flywheel housing? Can you turn it with a wrench on the front of the engine? Are you sure the clutch is dis-engaging? You didn't get dirt and mud in the clutch housing?

no visible underside damage, though I'm sure shes out of alignment!
Its (currently) an auto, so no clutch to speak of. Turned the engine by hand today, so perhaps I just killed the starter? how do I check? |

Take it off and have it tested.
Make sure it's not the battery or the cables first.
