Backlash from clutch? '87 325
1987 325 (2.7L) She has some pretty significant back-lash/bucking when I let completely off the throttle especially in 1st & 2nd. It's something I've been living with but it seems to be worse recently and I'm to the point where I'm a little worried.
I replaced a whiny/leaky diff with a used LSD from an IS which seems tight but haven't spec'd it. Turning the driveline (when dis-engaged from tranny) turns the right rear wheel without slop. Can't remember for sure if the old diff also had backlash/bucking but I'm pretty sure it did. Guibo is 1 year new <10K miles. I had a similar problem with an old 944 and it turned out to be the equivalent of torsion springs in the clutch so my mind immediately went there. Before dropping the transmission I thought I'd ask if I'm barking up the wrong tree... Any ideas??? Last edited by martinflewell; 07-14-2008 at 10:00 AM.. |

bad engine mount?
Yours has a spring hub clutch but if a spring was broken it would probably jam up the pressure plate and cause many more problems.

The motor-mounts look good. They would be torn or otherwise visibly failing, right? Is there a way to test them or should I just replace them?
I recently replaced the tranny mounts as one of them had become saturated with oil (selector rod seal leak) and visibly failed. I also tried letting the clutch out a little with the hood open & e-brake on and didn't see the engine jump or lean terribly but didn't go until it stalled. |

The engine mounts have to be pretty bad to show wear. Usually they become shorter with age. Bad mounts can also allow the mechanical fan to impact the radiator hoses.
I'm not saying its the mounts for sure but on an 87 its probably due for its second set of engine mounts.
