Red face Lost Key Nightmare-95 325is

I bought this 95 325is (manufactured in winter 94) with only one key (not electronic) that worked on both doors, ignition, and trunk (never tried the glove box). I went to the dealership and ordered an extra copy according to the VIN but they sent a key that does not work. Reordered and they sent the same non functioning key. They suggested that I take my key to a locksmith. Now I am slamming my head into a wall because I have lost that key.

The dealership tried unsuccessfully to break into the car and now it is double locked. They are saying it will take them 7 or so hours to drill a hole in the trunk to get into the car, replace the door cylinder (with the door closed, apparently can't be opened from the inside if double locked), and drill out and replace the ignition cylinder. (trunk, passenger door, and glove not installed) Total ~ $1,300.

I'm not a mechanic but have successfully followed your articles to replace valve cover seal, transmission mounts, front/back brakes, and headliner.

Please help!!!

I dont have any suggestions but there has to be a better solution.

Why can't they order a new correct key?

They say that the locks must have been changed at some point without BMW knowledge.

I would try anything but the dealer. Call locksmiths, junkyards and non-dealer repair shops. $1300 is too much money to spend on a car of that age for a repair that does not improve the car.
