Turning Noise

I have a 92 E30 convertible (restored thanks to Pelican). Lately I have noticed at low speeds when I turn the steering wheel a humming noise comes from the front of the car. It seems to be getting louder over time. Also when I turn the wheel to the left, I hear a loud clunk sound as I turn the wheel towards the right. Any clue as to what this might be?

Thanks!

The humming noise could be your steering rack. The clunking noise could be caused by any of the following: ball joint (in control arm or tie rod end) or possibly stabilizer bar connecting link.

It could also be the p/s pump.

Start with the sway bar end links then the rest of the things Yurick said. After that see if it makes noise turning side to side whit the front end in the air

Did you do any brake work? If you didn't put the spring clips back on the calipers or if they are weak, the brake pads and callipers will clunk and rattle, usually when you turn or hit bumps. I had to put new clips on my E36 because of noise and it corrected it.

If it doesn't do it when you apply brake pedal in a turn, you may want to take a look.

My power steering pump has been whining a little for years, kind of a groan sometimes. I have changed fluid several times, it seems to work ok and it doesn't leak, so I just turn the radio up.
