Hi.
I have a E30 M50 Turbo with a strange sound. I thought that it was the Vanos Unit but itīs been replaced 3-times now, also the tensioners has been replaced. Still the same sound. Totaly quite under 2500 rpm but over that it sounds really bad. Im out of ideas now and hope that you can help me. Movie link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP_VFaKIo-Q&feature=channel_page

scope it.... either with a piece of wood (like a 1x1) or w/ an auto stethescope. I had the same type of noise on my m50...swapped the vanos w/ dr.vanos unit stg 2 unit and did not fix the problem. Scoped it and found it to be a broken alternator bolt..believe it or not. Thing was it wasn't noticable till about 2700-3000 rpm. I know it may be a long shot that it's the same problem, but a scope could help you pinpoint the issue... at least give ya an area to investigate further.
