Clunk from the rear... can't find it...

Hi everyone, Just finish working under my car, 88 325is. I have noticed this clunking sound from time to time when I accelerate from a stop and sometimes when I decelerate in 1st gear at parking lot speed. I jacked it up turned the wheels and could hear something from the center bearing area. Ordered a new bearing and guibo from Pelican Parts, thank you very much, replaced the guibo, it was shot. couldn't get the drive shaft spline clamp off and I tried with two sizes of plumbers wrench. Decided to leave the center bearing for now since it didn't seem to be bad. The U joints seemed ok. It sort of seemed like the only movement was from the differential where it meets the drive shaft. I put it together drove it, sounded much better for about 2 miles then I noticed the clunk again... I don't really know what that can mean.

Check your rear shock mounts - they have a tendency to go bad and then make racket in the rear.

I believe that I have the same problem. I had someone to set in the back seat and listen to it. And sure enough it's a racket right over the passenger back tire.

If you find those mounts to be indeed defective, replace them with higher quality or heavier duty types.

Unhappy

well I checked out the shock mounts and they are good. The rear shocks were replaced fairly recent with some crappy CARQUEST shocks. I guess I was aware of this before I bought the car but oh well.... If I move the rear shocks side to side, it does make a sort of clunky noise when the upper part of the shock its the lower part, but I am not entirely convinced this is the noise I am hearing.??? so I don't know. I guess the next step will be to have someone drive it while I sit in the back and see if I can find the noise?
