ABS computer

hey guys, got a 95 m3 with a abs light on, just brought it to a foreign car repair shop and they said the abs computer is either shot or has not been coded to the car

my father and I did some swaping between our parts car with that computer but that was a long time ago(we ve been chasing this light FOREVER) so we dont remember which one got back into this car, its either the original or the parts car

guess my question is are the abs computer units interchangible parts for these cars or do they have to be coded for each car for the car to accept it?

called a dealer and they said that the abs computers are indeed coded to each car, in new model cars they are even vin specific

so the action would be send if off for a rebuild or buy a new one
