Hi, I drive a 2000 bmw 318i. i've noticed the coolant needs to be topped up on a monthly basis. is this normal or is it because i live in sub-saharan Africa where temperatures are usually 30 degrees celsius on average?

No, it should hold coolant. I would pressure test the cooling system. If the system will not hold pressure and there are no external leaks the head gasket may be faulty.
