1985 325e (5-sp) Blinking Check Engine Light

Hello All,

I am jdfromla, the noobiest noob in the kingdom. I bow to your superior BMW knowledge.

My neighbor's '85 325e has a blinking "check engine" light. Not having a lot of experience with this particular model. I checked the Pelican Parts technical area for the trouble code retrieval procedure. After numerous attempts at gas pedal pushing, I cannot get the light to do anything other than blink regularly. It blinks as soon as the key is turned to "on" and continues while the engine is running.

From what I understand, the normal "check engine light" illumination results in a non-blinking, solid light. Since I cannot get the light to stop blinking and give me the five-second solid light indicative of diagnostic mode, something else must be wrong. What gives?

Thanks in advance,
Jerry
