AC's blows cold, yet button won't remain on??

My 1990 325i convertible's AC compressor will engage and blow cold air... but only while holding in the AC button(????) Has anyone ever heard of this happening? We just filled the freon level and it took a pound. Would low freon cause this? Is it possible that the low pressure control switch would cause this symptom for some reason or could it be that the AC button itself is mechnaically broken? I'm puzzled!

+1
The switch should latch mechanically. The latch is broken. You need a new switch if it is replaceable. Or just put a jumper since it will cycle anyway when temp is satisfied and will remain off until the blower is turned ON.
