E36 engine temperature sensor

I'm asking about the temp sensor that sends a signal to the the ECU, not the temp guage. Is there a way to test without removing it? If so what kind of resistance reading should be read? Plus where can one break into the signal line? I don't what to remove the intake manifold.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not having a overheating problem the temp gauge runs at the halfway mark on the temp indicator. My problem seems to be when the engine goes into closed loop it starts to sputter and runs like crap. Prior to heating up (open loop) it runs fine.
Thanks JLM.
