Hello: Just replaced my diff with a 3.73 LSd in my e30. Changed the gear oil before install and made sure there was very little play in the input and output of it. Now a hear a clunking sound when I make right hand turns mid-turn and occasionally on the freeway depending on speed and road condition. If I put my hand on the rear tunnel, I can feel the vibration. I'm thinking a messed up a CV-joint, but how can I tell which one? I'm tentatively ruling out Center support bearing, because now clunking under shifting, acceleration - thoughts? Thanks!

I would probably take a close look at the center support bearing first, as it needs to be preloaded when you install it, and will clunk around if it's not. I'm assuming that you disconnected it during the installation - I would probably recheck the preload and add a whole bunch more to see if it's the problem.

+1 on the CB
Also, check the CV's if a boot is ripped...jack the rear up (both wheels) and turn each side. separately..does the wheel turn before the inner CV, is there slack when you start turning the wheel before you feel load?? Was it a new LSD?

A ripped cv boot would not cause a clunk. A clunk is caused by two pieces of metal smashing against another.
Did it clunk before you changed the differential? Did it start clunking right from the get go? Cause and effect! Possible cause of clunks: rear stabilize links, rear trailing arm bushings, rear shock mounts, guibo, u joint, improperly seated spring, exhaust pipe bumping against something, lower/upper shock bolts not tight enough, other loose bolts. |
