How to Remove Seat Back from Front Seat?
Hello,
After a session with an instructor during a recent track day, the passenger seat back on my 1997 M3 failed to stay up. (It was the first time I had used a Schroth four point harness for the instructor.) The motors all work fine but the backrest release lever is useless. The seat just lays down on the rear seat. I think the backrest release lever is broken or has come off. I have been able to remove the entire seat. However, I cannot figure out how to get either the molded seat back or the padded seat back off the frame. The very levers that I need to work on stick out the side. Can you tell me how to access the interior of the passenger side backrest? Thanks! Last edited by NHRef; 06-21-2011 at 05:07 PM.. |

Look along the bottom edge of the panel. If i recall correctly, there are a couple screws that hold the panle on.

Here's a few write ups on repairing an E30 seat. Yours is probably similar.

The levers coming out of the side of the plastic molded back panel simply pull free...may take a bit of leverage but they come out pretty easy as do the plastic trim pieces that surround the levers. All basically snap in place....and yes, you can't remove the back panel until the levers and trim pieces are off.
