E39 528i Zimmerman Rotor Prep?
The Zimmerman OEM rotors I bought from Pelican had a leaflet in the box that said NOT to clean the rotor surface prior to installing. I thought ALL rotors needed to be prepped to remove the coating from the factory. What's the prep process for these Zimmerman rotors prior to mounting?
Thanks, m3doc24 |

I would wipe off the film with laquer thinner or brake cleaner on the swept area only.
You should break in new rotors with old pads and new pads with old rotors. |

Since 2008, Otto Zimmermann GmbH has used a coating that they call "Coat Z – AntiCorrision". There is a reason that they put that note in the box. This coating is intended to be left on. The area that the pads touch will be wiped clean the first time you use the brakes. The rest of the rotor is intended to stay protected by the coating.
If you have greasy fingerprints on the working surface, you should clean the grease off with brake cleaner, but try not to remove the coating from the edges, holes, or grooves. |

If you have the Coat-Z Zimmerman rotors, you do not need to clean them. Clean off any grease with cleaner, but try not to remove the coating.
I disagree with Rocket. You need to bed-in the new pads to the new rotors. StopTech : Balanced Brake Upgrades read this. |

I'll have to look it up, but It's what I've always done.
The StopTech article only refers to new pads with new rotors, but doesn't say it's mandatory (or I missed it ![]() |
