325 radio noise

My daughter drives an R-title '89 325ic. Neat little car but with issues. One is radio noise. Buzzes all the time. Sometime ago I think I read something about a battery behind the dash that needs changed. Am I on the right track and can you help me locate it? Thanx, Scott

What do you mean by R-title?

Is it the stock radio? I'm not aware of any battery behind the dash. Typically, radio nose is caused by poor shielding of the ignition wires. Take look at those, are they stock?

In the old days, radio noise was common due to selection of aftermarket plug wires and the use of non-resistor spark plugs.

Does it sound like ignition or alternator hum?

Make sure that the hood is grounded to shield ignition noise, or try adding another filter to the power wire to the radio to isolate alternator noise. If your car has an antenna amplifier, you may need to find its power source and filter that as well to keep alternator noise out.

I am guessing that R-Title means reclaim title, right?

Radio noise

R-title is "Reconstructed", a rebuildable wreck that the insurance companys write off as not worth fixing. I do remember reading that there is supposed to be some device that keeps all the codes and service reminders stored in case of loss of battery voltage. The car does have original plug wires and they are not in the best shape. I will replace them. The hood ground wire is broken. I will replace that as well. Radio is after market. Thanx for the ideas.

The stock radios have a storage unit that does remember radio codes. It was a theft protecter idea, as if the radio didn't get a constant stream of power, it went into lockdown, which you needed the code to reverse. It stopped people from stealing the radio, but is a pain when your battery dies and you don't have the code. If your radio is aftermarket, though, it won't have the memory unit. how old is the radio? If replacing those wires also don't work, you might need to send the radio in to get repaired.

Changed wires and corrected ground strap and still have noise. Radio is aftermarket so no codes or internal battery. Still remembering something about a battery behind the dash that maintains power to service codes, etc. Anyone?
