i have exactally same problem as bummedbmer, no 1st or 2nd in my auto 325ci.. whats wrong?

Hi guys. Loud clunks on automatic transmissions are often a sign of low transmission fluid. Have you checked the fluid lately? It's not terribly easy to do, but it may solve your problem. Other than that, I would suggest you have someone with a code reader take a look at it to see if there are any fault codes that are being put out by the unit.
