Oil pump replacement

Hello all... I am very interested in the torque specs for the oil pump. In the Bentley manual it states the torque should be at 16 +/- 8 ft lbs. I set the wrench and it just seems so... Well ... not tight. Does that sound about right? I imagine this is why Wayne's book says its a good time to tack weld the bolts
But I don't have welding equipment.

One more thing I can't figure out. Bentley states you should put sealant on the timing case cover and on the end. I can't figure out what that means. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The sealant is the silicone based gasket compound. The sealant will help to keep the oil pan gasket in place during installation as well as prevent unwanted oil leaks.

Oh... So in addition to the gasket I should also use the silicon gasket material around the whole pan. Ok... Thanks for the reply Yurick.

I dont remember putting sealant on the oil pan gasket.

Some gaskets, such as the Valve cover, have a few specific troublesome areas where you put dab of sealant but they dont call for sealant on the whole gasket area.

You don't have to apply silicone all around the gasket, unless you want to. The area around the timing belt cover, however, is prone to leaking and it may not be a bad idea to seal it.

Ok. Someone else had definitely changed the gasket before and I really didn't notice any sealant remains. Thanks for replies though. Still curious about the torque specs.

The Bentley manual is indeed calling for 15 to 17 ft. lbs of torque for the oil pump bolts. When I worked on mine, the pump was inside a loose oil pan, so it is difficult to get a torque wrench in there anyway.
