Air con problem

Hi. My 1997 BMW 328i Aircon is becoming quite unreliable. It will turn itself off after a while, and then later turn itself back on ( whilst operating under a manual setting and not on auto). Initially, it was also blowing hot air through the foot vents even though it wasn't turned on.
any assistance greatly appreciated.
