Most obvious thing on something like this is loose wiring. If the entire cluster goes out, a major ground? Intermittent electrical problems are devil spawn. From experience I know the car will run with the entire cluster out of the car - With the multiple connectors on your dash I just don't know of any one thing that would make everything quit. It's probably a ground issue. You should check all the connections and ground points. Older BMWs have this problem pretty often.

I've had two M3s and a 325i and have had this problem with all the cars. It also disables the cruise control when it goes out. I suspect that it has to do with the fuse block. I've found that if I start the car and the instruments dont' work, remove fuse 31 and reinsert it, this will correct the problem until it does it again. This isn't a permanent fix, but will make your instrument cluster workfor the short term. Clear coat peeling is another issue I've had with all my BMWs. | ||
