If you do not have the bmw special tool for removing the fan but a rather long spanner on it and give it a controlled wack with a medium hammerno rubber. CLOCKWISE!

I respectfully disagree with this approach. While it may work sometimes, I have many emails from people who have broken their pump or flange in this manner.

I have the water pump pulley counter holder tool but seldom to never use it anymore.
A mechanic told he just puts a 22mm open ended wrench on the pulley, he puts the wrench in the twelve oclock positon and then hits it's from the right (clockwise) with an air hammer and it pops right off. I usually use a 4lb hammer and give a good whack and it pops right off. If you take your fan off frequently and put anti-sieze on the threads it always comes off without much ado. I dont really see how you could damage the pulley this way? |

I'd only use this method to remove an old pump that you don't plan on ever using again.
Mine was so loose that I could just undo it with a big enough spanner.... |

I have to admit, that I still havn't been able to accept the cost of the thin long handle wrech to remove the fan......so its long blade screwdriver resting on the edge of the nut and swift blow with a hammer that works for me!

I've always just put a long wrench on the fan nut and given it a good blow clockwise with a ball peen hammer. Comes off everytime. If the water pump is bad, it doesnt matter if you damage the shaft.
