wierd clanking noise
I have a 97, 328i sedan with 169K. I have brand new tie rod assemblies, new Monore Sensatrac Struts, new stabilizer bar links, Meyle metal control arms with around 50k on them (they had a 30 year guarantee), an Xrace and M3 solid control arm bushings, new rear trailing arm bushings and new strut mounts.
I have looked at the entire exahust system, the motor and transmission mounts and they are Ok. I even pulled the front bumper off to make sure the horn was secure. I used a pry bar to check for play in the ball joints plus did the usual 6 oclock 12 oclock shake test for play and there was none. It only gives a slight clank when going over a bump. Its not the same deep knock sound you get from a ball joint or a tie rod end it's more of a clank. There are no drivability issues in fact it handles great. My thoughts are that maybe the combination of the M3 solid control arm bushings with the XBrace and the Meyle all metal ball joints have made the front end really stiff and more apt to be noisey. I had an issue like this when I put polyurethane stabilizer bushings in; it caused a rattle in the sun roof? When I took them out the rattle went away. I noticed the spring isloators were a little worn but not torn when I redid the struts. I doudt theyd cause a clunk? but you never know. |
