E36 erratic tach problems

I am having erratic tach problems with my 95 318ti. The tach pointer jumps all over the place and stop working and starts back jumping again and sometimes it works but not often. Any suggestions???? I cleaned the ground wires lower left side and under the hood, but the same problem. Thanks
