Oil inspection lights

I have recently acquired a 97 328is. This is the first BMW I've owned. How do I go about resetting the oil change inspection lights. I know there is a tool you can buy, but is there another way? Any ideas?

Never had that light come on before. I do believe it needs to be reset will that tool. I think $ 60.00 or $ 140.00 the one with the code reader. Great tool for the DIY'er.

There is a short cut. I've only done this on my '87 325is, but I know the E36 uses the same reset tool. Open up the cover where the reset tool plugs in, plug a wire lead into pin number 10, hold the other end to a ground point and have someone turn the key all the way on, but not not crank the engine. That will reset the lights.

Richard, do you know where the reset tool plugs in on this car? I found the OBD diagnostic port under the drivers side dash. Is the reset port under the dash or in the engine bay maybe? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't remember in the E36, but I assume it's the same as the E30. It's under the hood and looks like a radiator cap or something along those lines. It's black and it dcrews right off.

On the E36, the diagnostic port is on the passenger side of the engine compartment, next to the valve cover. There is a small cover that unscrews to reveal the port.
