I am replacing the upper and lower timing chain gaskets TCGon my 1991 318is M42 and the "profile" gasket. I have the motor torn down to the head and I would rather not proceed any further i.e. setting time and camshaft removal if it is not necessary. Do I need to remove the head if I am changing the TCG? I have read in forums that removal of the old TCG would damage the existing head gaskets. Any truth to this?

The head gasket does seal the upper and lower timing covers. If you are careful, you may be able to reuse the headgasket. Just apply some sealant to it when reassembling.
