Hi i have a e36 323i and it has got lumpy tick over bad fuel consumption and lack of torque in lower gears and it can judder but no loss of power as soon as you touch the acclarator it drives normal.had it on computer and it said vanos mecanical faliure ive been told it could be the vanos solenoid or camshaft position sensor ive got no sounds coming from the vanos at all im sort of stuck dont want to be buying parts for no reason any ideas.

the noise could be the VANOS actuator, especially if you have rough running and a fault code to go with it. if the problem is worse when cold, suspect the VANOS actuator.

hi thanks for the reply what I meant to say was the vanos is silent no rattles or clunks from it and when it is cold it runs nearly normal and as soon as it gets to temperature it goes lumpy again but there is no power loss when driving took it back to my friends garage and it said the same vanos mechanical failure and I was told it could be the vanos solenoid or the camshaft position senor
