My question is the same as mChav: what in the heck are the plastic rings on the rubber boot for? They are not mentioned at all in the DIY or the Bentley. Do they stay on, or are they removed? Do you use the bigger ring to pull the boot up into the cockpit? What then? I am ready to do that step next. Please advise. Thanks!

The plastic ring is used to install the new boot. It saves it from tearing andm akes the job a lot easier.
