Hi, I have a 1999 328i E46 with 180,000 on it, I bought it with 94K and have never changed the fluid and have no knowledge if it ever was. I went to the dealership and explained my problem. Basically at approx 70 miles an hour the car jerks once, the RPM's go up about 500 and the transmission light comes on. I pull over, cut the car off wait ten seconds and it resets. It shifts fine until the 70 mph mark. The dealership brought a sample of the fluid to me, it was a light brown with very fine powdery glitter to it. He stated that was metal shavings and I needed a rebuild costing about 3,400 and a new BMW transmission costing about 8,000. My question is, can a fluid and filter change fix the problem, or do I need a rebuild.

If there is a slip like you are describing, check that the fluid is full. If so, the clutches may be worn and it may be time for a rebuild.
