Hi. I have a 2003 318i E46 from Japan. Trouble started 3 months ago. The engine service light orange came on with about 300km before the next service, and I promptly serviced the car. I never bothered to have it cleared out of the system afterwards, and last week the engine stopped running after I left the car wash. The gearbox went into protect mode and I couldn't start the car even though I could crank it. I had it towed to the garage, and it briefly started again gearbox still in protect modebefore it stopped again. I can get it cranking, but still no start. My mechanic says he checked everything, and he is suspecting a faulty Basic Control Unit DME. Please give me your take on it.

Could be the DME. I can't help without knowing what is missing from the system when you are trying to start it. When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and pressure fuel, volume and quality. Are there any fault codes? Once you figure out what is missing, it will be easier to diagnose.
