My 2005 X3 ran well for first 15 miles of the commute today then the low oil light flashed while at a stop light. during acceleration the low oil light stayed on and within 100yds the car died and would not start. A road service tech added 2 qtrs of oil and it started but would not move. It was towed to a BMW dealer who stated that there was oil pressure build up leaking from the value cover. They cleaned the plugs with no luck. They suspect that it may be a camshaft sensor but fear that there may be damage to the shaft. Is that possible? It feels like the dealer is guessing at a very expensive rate. Any suggestions?

The camshaft can be damaged from low oil pressure, however I am unsure of the correlation between the sensor being faulty. Your vehicle can stall and not start if it runs out of oil or oil pressure, if your oil light came on and you continued to drive, I would assume engine damage has occurred.
