Love your write-ups guys...thanks!
I am in the process of a head rebuild on a 1984 318i as pictured in this article. The car is also leaking fluids from many locations including both pan gaskets. Is it possible to do this job without dropping the suspension? What size are the torx head??? bolts on the reinforcement cover and do they need to be replaced? Should I be taking this opportunity to clean the internal parts - and how? Thanks.

It's best to drop the suspension. If I remember correctly they are T27. Cleaning the internal parts is tough without a tear down.

I replaced the oil pan gasket in my '90 325iC some years ago. As I recall, I did not drop the suspension, but had to loosen the motor mounts and hoist the engine about 4 inches to get some clearance underneath. It may be doable, but a big pain in the hemorrhoids. I also had to loosen and move the steering rack out of the way - as I said, pain in the azz. Good luck.
