Hi I have a BMW E46 2003, the aircon seems to cool fine BUT strangely it cools through the side vents only however boiling air sent through the main centre vents. Even if all is turned off there is constantly heat radiating around the centre consol.If I close off the centre vents then the hot air gets redirected to the footwell. I have been told it may be the heat valve but that doesn't make sense, as if the heater was jammed then cool air wont be sent through the side vents. I've also had the external temperature sensor replaced and the fault cleared. Any ideas?

I would check for fault codes using a BMW scan tool. Some models will send fresh air through the center vents. If it is hot outside, this may be what you are feeling,
