I have a e38 1999 740i and everyone once in a while I see steam/fluid shooting out of the upper right of the radiator by the nipple. So I don't know weather it is the nipple that I need to replace the nipple the radiator is around 2 years old and the temp gauge doesn't say it's over heating.
The picture attached is where the steam and fluid is coming out that is not my car

You may have a leaky side tank. I would pressure test the cooling system. This will help pinpoint the leak.
