Hi! I recently replace both tie rods on a 1998 M3 conv. To get the new passenger tie rod the same length as the old, I had to screw in the outer end all the way until it stopped. When I got the car aligned, there was not enough adjustment to keep the steering wheel straight and still get the spec amount of toe-in. The caster and camber on the passenger side is also a couple degrees out of spec. Is this indicative of a bent control arm, worn FCAB, or worn strut mount? Or all of the above?

This could be a rack that was not centered or a bent component. I would guess at it being the spindle. When the vehicle is being aligned, have the suspension and subframe inspected.

The other odd thing is that the car didn't pull, but now it pulls to the right after the alignment. There was no odd tire wear before either; I just had a worn/loose tie rod.
Is it possible I got a too-long tie rod or something? I know that wouldn't fix the camber/caster issues, but the fact that they ran out of adjustment, and the steering wheel is cocked left, seems like the right rod is too long. |
