Hi there , Love your site, extremely comprehensive.I have just replaced the head gasket on my wifes bmw 1998 e46 318i m43.
Once it was back together I started the motor and it ran, although a bit roughly , much to my relief, then after about 1 minute it conked out and since then it will not start again. I have double checked the timing and am sure all is right. Although I did not use the special tools to lock crank on flywheel or cam position tool. Are there more than one positioning holes in flywheel for special tool ?I would greatly appreciate any thoughts and ideas you have as to what to check and what the problem may be. I thought it may be a sensor but wouldn't really know.

There multiple holes in the flywheel / flexplate that can be mistaken if the correct tool is not used. I would suggest locking the engine down with the right tools.

When your engine doesn’t start you’ll want to check the basics. Check spark, fuel injector pulse and pressure fuel, volume and quality. Check compression too.
