Yet another crankshaft position sensor question

I have a 2006 325i. I removed the intake manifold to replace the crankcase breather hoses due to a vacuum leak, car misfiring at idle. While putting the cables back on the crankshaft position sensor cable connector fell apart in my hands...cracked into several pieces, most importantly the locking mechanism was broken off and useless. After a day of trying to find a replacement and everyone telling me I had to replace the engine wiring harness I thought I'd ask if cutting the cable, securing the connector to the sensor, then splicing in a short section of wire to relieve the stress on the cable and prevent the cable from being unseated from the sensor will cause any problems. Are these signals so sensitive that this solution is ill advised?
