I have a 97 BMW 318is and when I am changing the gears, the begin to rattle to and fro making a knocking sound on neutral and all the gears. kindly advise if the gear lever mounting is damaged.

Could be something in the driveshaft assembly. You will have to inspect the drive line and shifter for loose parts.
