Ive just swapped out a friends automatic transmission in his e36 318i 1994 model. After completing the task of putting it all back together.....the starter motor fails to engage the flex plate to turn the engine over..I can hear it spinning...its almost like the cog on the starter motor shaft is failing to reach the position it needs to be to function.....fully charged battery....nothing left undone....however the starter motor was fine and working properly prior to replacing the slipping transmission. ...what could be the cause of this?

Voltage drop test the main battery starter cable and starter ground. If ok, the starter is faulty.
