I just got a 1989 BMW 325I convertible. It, ran great until it started to surge from about 700rpms to 2000rpms when first started, regardless of temp. or time of day. It would last for about 5 mins. and then level out to prescribed idling around 700-800 rpms, then it would be fine all day. even after stopping, parking, etc. up to about 5 hours. Took it on a 400 mi. trip with no problem other than the starting ritual. Now it has started bouncing 500-1000 rpms and stays like that, never levels out. CE light came on and stays on didn't happen until this latest development. Is this an ECU problem?

This sounds like an issue with the idle valve or idle valve ecu. If you restrict air to the valve, does the idle settle down?
