we have a 97 328i and when you first accelerate..it thumps a little.. but not after that.. have a replacement carrier bearing to put in but is this the real issue?...please help...kid going to college...dont want to send him out in a a lemon.

The clunk could be the bearing or a trans mount. You'll have to inspect the items to see what is moving too much .
