Tons of great info here. I do have a question and hopefully you can help. I have a 85 325e. Car starts good. During warm up idle surges for about 30 secs then goes back to normal idle. Also when I'm decelerating down to a stop the rpm will go to about 1200 or so and just surges from about 800 to 1500 while stopped. I have to play with the clutch to calm it down to normal idle

Sounds like the idle control ECU is faulty. First confirm the idle switch at the throttle is working correctly.
