The Bentley manual hot clearances do not make sense. The metal parts expand when hot so the clearance would be less when hot then when cold. A hot clearance of .008 and cold clearance of .010 would make sense. Having a .012 hot would likely result in a .014 clearance cold.
"The Bentley Manual lists the correct valve clearance at 0.30mm 0.012in with the engine hot, or 0.25mm 0.010in with the engine cold. In this case, the engine is cold, so I adjust using a 0.25mm feeler gauge." __________________ This post was auto-generated based upon a question asked on our tech article page here: BMW E30 3-Series Valve Adjustment (1983-1991) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article |

BMW supplies hot and cold valve clearances, BUT they do not suggest adjusting when hot. If it were me, I would ignore the hot numbers always and only adjust cold.
