I am in the process of a full top end rebuild on my 328i '97, and when I sent the valve cover to the paint shop they for some unknown reason removed the metal liner that runs along the coil packs found only on the plastic valve covers I think. Never going there again. I am concerned that the packs may not ground properly since they aren't touching metal. Would I have to daisy chain or individually ground each coil now? Or can I reinstall everything without the metal sheet and just use rely on the two factory ground wires.

You can ground them all together, I would assume. Or get a new cover.
