Hi. I'm driving a 2003 e39 525i in South Africa. the dives nice after a short distance trip and then starts to sputter and loose speed no matter how hard I press on the accelerator pedal, and petrol fumes is strong I cant drive with open windows. What could be the problem?

Is the check engine light on or flashing when the problem is present? Sounds like an engine misfire. I would check spark, fuel and compression on all cylinders.

Plug into your DME and read what faults are present. Right now, it could be more than a few things - such as vacuum leak, fuel issue, etc.
