I remember a mountain bike race"back in the day." It was an 18 hour mtb race (which afterwards a friend correctly mentioned- "there is NOTHING I would like to do for 18 hours.") At the end of the event, tired and dying on the vine, I sat in my trusty 951, and suddenly a hissing sound and smoke emanated from the steering column. - for a prolonged 30 seconds or so.

The sensation at the time was not of a firecracker, but of 100 ladyfingers doing their best to fumigate me out.

At the time, the 87 car- ... well this happenend circa 2005. you do the math. It wasn't new.

As I was tired from the ride, I couldn't entirely comprehend the concept, other than- "my airbag just blew it's wad"

It did not blow up in my face. At the time, (and still), I was happy it didn't kill me, and as a bonus, it didn't even, blow the seal on the steering wheel horn section.

The car filled with smoke, and as tired as I was from the ride, instead of getting out and grabbing a fire extinguisher or something, I opened the sunroof and window, and fell right to sleep.

I drove the car valiantly until it burst into flames years later.
