Well James, if the laptop is 5 years old, it is time to get a faster one with more memory, ETC. Unfortunately website designers load their sites with ads and those all come from a web host that might be in China or Russia or ????. They take huge amounts of time to load and even if blocked the web pages will be slow. In effect you have to over power them and that can only be done with the fastest internet connection available in your area, the fastest computer and all running at 64 bits.

One of the things I do when loading a site with ads is to watch for whatever it is I want to get to such as the off topic forum here and as soon as it shows, click the stop symbol at the top of the browser to kill the ads from continuing to load.
