Exploding 914 Engine?
Hey guys-
Heres the deal...recently brought a Type4/914 1.8L longblock home from a friends house, he got it from...forget that part.
Anyways, hooked it up to starter jig, checked valves, it turns over a little "stiff", like more than just compression, but its doesnt smell burned, doesnt 'clunk', no end play, distributor drive is 180 off, I hooked up electricals and decided to fire it up.
*BAM* blew BOTH valve covers and oil filler cap off.
Hmm...checked firing/plug wire order, timing, valves...
*BOOM* same thing. LOTS of white smoke.
It looks like a well run engine, I've watched the valve train open/close and it seems to be crank/cam timed correctly.
I've worked in a couple german auto shops for 8 years total, and had the occasional backfiring,- never blown the valve covers off an engine.
I'm using the 2 barrel weber...009 dist, blue coil.
Any Ideas...?
Thanks !

UPDATE-
well der distributor drive wasnt exactly 180 degrees out.
somewhere below that...anyhow, retarding timing a random # of degrees helped, and I got it running, ...and I think someone got locked in there because they're knocking pretty hard to get out!!Thanks anyways!
